Numbers USA
In this video Roy Beck makes clear – with charts that even the numerically challenged will grasp immediately – what will happen to America’s population if our current rate of immigration continues. It’s terrifying stuff. He also shows how useless it is to try to rescue the wretched of the earth by bringing them to America. Using gumballs – even better than charts! – he shows we can make scarcely a dent in the numbers of the wretched, but we can certainly make ourselves wretched by trying. This is something we need to think about when we contemplate the millions of refugees worldwide. We have to find better solutions than trying to bring ever-greater numbers to the U.S.

As a European, all I can say is that I did not seem to spot many persons of Indian origin in the audience…are we to believe that WASPS are native Americans? where would all these persons in the room be if their ancestors had not MIGRATED to the US, and nearly wiped out Native Americans? The presenter gives figures of immigration from 1965 onwards: are we to believe that US residents before then were not the sons and daughters of immigrants?
I once heard a person from a third world country explain how they had had to learn to “share poverty”. Can’t the US keep learning to “share wealth”? Can’t Americans realize that the biggest threat to their nation is climate change, and Bush’s deadly foreign policy, not population growth through immigration? We need a bit more solidarity in the XXIst century.
