Omnibus spending bill is the most important target to rein-in refugee program!

Posted by Ann Corcoran on November 30, 2015

It is also the hardest to accomplish, but this—the power of the purse—is the real Constitutional power that Congress has (if they would learn to use it).

Obama-Ryan-Budget

The last thing Speaker Paul Ryan wants is to have a budget battle over refugees in the coming days….He will have to decide whose side he is on!

There is much you can do this week and you must get involved because the NO borders pushers in the resettlement industry are reeling right now (scroll back through posts over the last few days).

To save me time since it has been so carefully presented by fellow blogger Richard Falknor at Blue Ridge Forum, click here, and read about Texas Rep. Brian Babin’s efforts in the House to attach a spending curb on the so-called “Omnibus” budget bill that must be voted on before December 11th (or the government shuts down).

The effort must start in the House, but we expect Senator Jeff Sessions and others to be involved in the Senate.

Go here to learn more and to see the 73 brave Members of Congress who have already signed on!

If you can only do one thing this week, this is it!  Pound your Member of Congress!

If yours is not among the 73, please let them know how important this issue is to you (the refugee industry is pulling out all the stops to make sure they stay in business.)

Action Alert:  Call you members of the House and Senate at 202-224-3121 and ask them to vigorously oppose the Refugee Resettlement funding contained in the Omnibus Spending Bill that will be voted on by 12-11-15! Please call by this Friday, Dec. 4th.

HIAS: “….most critical action we will ever ask you to take”

Posted by Ann Corcoran on November 30, 2015

HIAS is the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society and they are lobbying hard against the so-called “Safe Act” that may (or may not) be taken up by the Senate.

Hetfield Judiciary Committee

Mark Hetfield, Pres and CEO of HIAS is telling open borders activists that this is the most important threat to their plans, probably since the Refugee Act was passed in 1980. In my opinion, it’s not the ‘Safe Act,’ they should worry about, it is that public opinion is turning on the whole notion of third worlders being admitted en masse to America.

As I said earlier this morning and over the weekend—-they (the Left, the No Borders agitators, the resettlement contractors, Obama) have never been so threatened by a public relations backlash against the entire refugee resettlement apparatus and their taxpayer-funded livelihoods as they have post-Paris.

However, you and I know the “Safe Act” (which passed the House before the Thanksgiving recess) is only a diversionary measure to make us feel good—that our safety matters—but will never amount to much as the Obama Administration will simply declare that they have fully complied and screening is secure.

Nevertheless…..

This is what HIAS (one of nine major federal contractors) is saying in an action alert this morning.  If you are a reader more concerned with illegal immigration, know that HIAS was a leading organizer in support of the Gang of Eight Amnesty bill a few years ago.   They are for more immigration legal or illegal!

Tell Your Senators to Keep the Door Open for Refugees

Share on facebook Share on twitter Share on email Share on print

This is one of the most critical actions we will ever ask you to take.

The House of Representatives recently voted to pass legislation that could severely restrict refugee admissions into the United States. The “America SAFE Act” goes against our basic principles of welcoming the stranger and helping those in need. It would add layers of red tape — but no real security enhancements — to a program that is already effectively screening for security.

As the Senate prepares to debate similar anti-refugee legislation, they need to hear the voices of supporters of refugee resettlement. Send a message to your Senators now urging them to keep the door open for refugees.

Now, go here and see the text of the message they want their followers to send to US Senators.

I continue to be perplexed why a Jewish organization is so eager to admit mostly Muslim Syrians!

Texas governor threatens lawsuit against resettlement contractor over Syrians

Posted by Ann Corcoran on November 30, 2015

Abbott vs. Miliband!

The threat is directed at the International Rescue Committee*** headed by the former British Foreign Secretary, David Miliband. The lawsuit would pit Abbott against Miliband who came to the US in 2013 to head up the largest (financially) of the nine US resettlement contractors.

From the Houston Chronicle:

Texas Governor-elect Greg Abbott addresses media during a news conference, Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014, at the Capitol in Austin, Texas. Abbott is the first new Texas governor in 14 years — and he did it in a landslide. He crushed Democrat Wendy Davis by one of the biggest margins in any of three dozen gubernatorial races across the U.S., carrying nearly 60 percent of the vote by early Wednesday as Texas underwent its biggest political shake-up in decades. Texas Governor Greg Abbott

AUSTIN – Texas officials are escalating their opposition to Syrian refugees with a new order aimed specifically at resettlement groups that have indicated they will accept people fleeing the war-torn country: change your mind or risk getting sued by the state.

Texas health commissioner Chris Traylor issued the first lawsuit threat over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in a letter to the Dallas branch of the International Rescue Committee, which said earlier this month that it supports accepting Syrian refugees.

“We have been unable to achieve cooperation with your agency,” Traylor wrote in the letter, which was released to the Houston Chronicle late Sunday, adding that, “Failure by your organization to cooperate with the State of Texas as required by federal law may result in the termination of your contract with the state and other legal action.”

Similar letters are expected to be sent to any refugee resettlement group that takes a similar position against Gov. Greg Abbott.

Go to the Houston Chronicle for more and to see the letter.  Alas, it isn’t just Syrian Muslims going to Texas, but the state has been a target for the resettlement of large numbers of Somali and Iraqi Muslims as well.

Eight of nine major resettlement contractors operating in Texas:

Abbott may have to sue eight of the nine federal resettlement contractors (this is from Part II of my Texas trilogy of posts).  These are the nine federal resettlement contractors:

Please go to this list of subcontractors everywhere and scroll down to Texas.

Texas is the number one resettlement state in the nation! And, never forget, Democrats and the No borders agitators are working day and night to turn Red states Blue—Texas is their number one target!

Recognizing how lucrative the ‘welcoming’ Texas turf is (contractors are paid by the head to resettle refugees), eight of the nine contractors have set up shop somewhere in Texas.  The only one with no office there yet is the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society!

For more on Texas, go here to our three part series from earlier this summer.

And for much more on David Miliband and his friends in high places, click here.   Hillary adores him!

50 “faith leaders” pressure Ohio Governor Kasich on Syrian refugee stance

Posted by Ann Corcoran on November 30, 2015

I’ve told you over the holiday weekend that a massive PR campaign is underway to push back at the governors and others who are wary of admitting Syrian mostly Muslim refugees to the US.

They are very worried because this is the first real opposition to refugee resettlement in the 35 years of the program.

Here is just one example, this one from Ohio, of who is leading the pack in the pushback—CAIR and Islamic leaders joined by members of “interfaith” groups and resettlement contractors who make their living doing this work.

American Flag with Allahu Akbar

In 2014, Toledo, Ohio became a refugee resettlement city. In announcing the news the local ABC affiliate placed the newsman, Bill Hormann, in front of an American flag. The Arabic writing on the flag says “Allahu Akbar” (translated by an Arabic speaking reader of RRW). So glad we have a screen shot since the original story is now gone. https://refugeeresettlementwatch.wordpress.com/2014/02/03/toledo-lucas-county-looking-for-more-middle-easterners-will-welcome-refugees/

You can be sure if Obama said we were taking 10,000 Christian and Yazidi Syrians that CAIR would not be promoting letters like this one.  (BTW, I had to search for a few minutes to find the letter, at CAIR’s website, since the news article did not link to it).

Here is the story at the Columbus Dispatch:

A coalition of more than 50 faith and civic leaders sent an open letter to Gov. John Kasich last week asking him to reconsider his stance against resettling Syrian refugees in Ohio.

Among those who signed was Michael Orra, president of the Islamic Council of Ohio, which represents 24 Muslim groups and mosques in the state, including the Islamic Foundation of Central Ohio.

Kasich is “jumping on the GOP bandwagon” with his position, Orra said, one that is “un-American” in its wholesale refusal to admit the refugees.

“These people have been in refugee camps waiting their turn,” Orra said.  [Waiting their turn!—What nerve!—ed]

Toledo only began resettling refugees in 2014 as we reported here.

Toledo has a long-standing Arab-American community and leads the state in the number of Syrian refugees settling there: 54 this year.

Brittany Ford, the project manager and co-lead of the Welcome Toledo-Lucas County initiative to help immigrants settling in that area, expects more to come, despite Kasich’s stance.

Again, go here to CAIR’s website to see the letter and the signatures!  Is your “faith group” on the list?

If you live in Ohio, you must let Kasich know what you think!

The Left (the Democrat party and its friends at CAIR) need to make sure Ohio is a reliably blue state and that is why it is so important to continue to pour in the refugees and immigrants generally.

Again, those promoting Muslim resettlement to the US have never had the pushback they are getting since Paris, so please get involved!

We have many posts on the colonization of Ohio, click here for more.

Are you in a Wilson-Fish state?

Posted by Ann Corcoran on November 30, 2015

In so-called Wilson-Fish states the federal refugee resettlement program completely leaves out state elected officials and is run exclusively between the feds and a non-profit resettlement contractor (Volag).

That means that Catholic Charities among others is choosing who comes to your state/how many, and thus who you will educate and otherwise care for with your tax dollars!

So, if you live in one of the twelve designated Wilson-Fish states you have even less states’ rights than the others (and there is very little power for the governor in the others either).  When crafting the original Refugee Act of 1980, Senator Ted Kennedy made sure the law was written in such a way as to give very few rights to state elected officials and virtually none to Congress (except the power of the purse!)

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley delivers his State of the State address in the Historic Old House Chamber in the Capitol building in Montgomery, Ala., Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014. (AP Photo/Jay Sailors)

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley is one of 12 governors who need to reclaim their states’ rights and get the heck out of the federal Wilson-Fish program.

I have way too much to do today and am not wading into W-F. But, I urge all of you who live in these 12 states and one county to begin to research what this means for you and find a way to push back.

I was reminded of W-F this morning when I saw this Breitbart story posted yesterday.  See ‘what you need to know about W-F’ here.   And, this is what the Office of Refugee Resettlement says about it, click here.

States can opt-out of the refugee program, but beware!

For all of you in other states, remember that if your state decides to withdraw from the program—yes, it legally can withdraw as we reported on the law here in 2009—but remember this!    Waiting in the wings are the resettlement contractors/feds eager to find a “replacement designee” to turn your state into a Wilson-Fish state and run the program without any state involvement at all.

Is your state a Wilson-Fish state?

This is from the Breitbart story, and comes directly from the federal guidelines on W-F.  P.S. to Wyoming, watch out for your governor to allow the feds to set up a W-F program for WY (the only state in the nation which has no official program, although no refugees went to Montana in recent years).

This federal government website describes the program, as well as the VOLAGs in the 12 Wilson Fish states where they operate with virtually no oversight by the governments of the local states. Those VOLAGs, by state, are:

Alabama: USCCB – Catholic Social Services

Alaska: USCCB – Catholic Social Services

Colorado: Colorado Department of Human Services

Idaho: Janus Inc. (formerly Mountain States Group), Idaho Office for Refugees

Kentucky: USCCB – Catholic Charities of Louisville, Kentucky Office for Refugees

Louisiana: USCCB – Catholic Charities Diocese of Baton Rouge, Louisiana Office for Refugees

Massachusetts: Office for Refugees and Immigrants

Nevada: USCCB – Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada

North Dakota: LIRS – Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota

San Diego County, CA: USCCB – Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego

South Dakota: LIRS – Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota

Tennessee: USCCB – Catholic Charities of Tennessee, Tennessee Office for Refugees

Vermont: USCRI – Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program

RRW Weekly roundup for week ending November 28, 2015

Posted by Ann Corcoran on November 29, 2015

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, but it is now time to get to work perhaps more seriously than you have ever done before on this issue.

Those who are promoting the resettlement of hundreds of thousands of refugees to America (like these churches we told you about this morning) are now pulling out all the stops.  I’ve been following this issue for eight years and I have never seen a campaign like the one that started in the wake of the Paris terror attack.

BELIEVE ME! THEY ARE WORRIED!

The resettlement contractors have never been as worried as they are at this minute that their gravy train is being threatened by citizens standing up to them and that the issue is being discussed in American homes like never before.

The Obama Administration is worried that its final year to bring as many immigrant “seedlings” in to America as they can is in jeopardy.

There will be action in Congress, legal challenges to Governors who are standing up for state’s rights, and a major media blitz (already underway) to make you sound like a heartless bigot by the NO Borders Left who knew all along that Obama was changing America by changing the people!

We will have more tomorrow on what you need to do!

Here are our top three posts of the week (top daily posts are in the right hand side bar).  The third one is an older post.  It is always surprising to me why some old post takes off and goes viral.

Top Three Posts

1)Canada: Military thrown out of barracks to make room for Syrian refugees

2)Watch the death of Europe in 19 minutes….

3)First Syrian refugees arriving in Louisville, KY; helped with grant from Islamic charity

Here are our Top Ten Countries from which readers arrived at RRW this past week (excluding the US of course).

Top Ten Countries

Canada

Australia

Romania (for the second week in the top ten!)

Germany

France

Sweden

Norway

India

For our thousands of new readers

We repeat this below on most weeks so that if you are arriving here for the first time, you will know how to get the full benefit from a visit to RRW:

I apologize as always for not being able to read all of your e-mails, answer all of your comments, or get to all of your phone calls.  It is just me here (LOL! a reader sent me an e-mail about a subscription problem and asked that maybe one of my staff could check on it for them.  I have no staff! My time is my charitable contribution to the cause.)

And since I have no staff….

You might try finding your answers at our relatively new—Frequently Asked Questions (linked above in the header).

Also, try typing a few key words into our search window and see if you can find what you are looking for—-I have to use it all the time because with over 7,000 posts archived here, I need to find out what I’ve said in the past on a given topic.

I screen comments, so if I’m away from the computer, yours might not be posted for hours.  Sorry about that, but there is life to be lived.

I very much appreciate all of your requests for me to speak to your groups, but I am not taking any more speaking trips for the foreseeable future (except two I had previously committed to for 2016) mostly because I believe my strength is in researching and reporting the news while traveling gobbles up enormous amounts of my time.

Go here to a previous message from me for more tips on getting the most out of your visits to RRW.  As I said, we have over 7,000 posts archived here so you might need some guidance in finding useful information.

Follow me on twitter because there is so much breaking news on refugees that I can’t possibly post it all! So please follow me on twitter or follow the twitter feeds in my right hand sidebar to keep up with the news!  I am @RefugeeWatcher, click here.  I’m posting articles there that readers send me, but that I simply can’t post for lack of time.

Our facebook page, here, passed the 11,000 ‘likes’ mark last week!

And, our first Youtube video from last spring is over 2 million views now.  If you haven’t seen it, click here.  See also a video (not too long) of a talk I gave recently in the DC area (at VDARE).

It is Sunday morning: Is your church lobbying Congress for 100,000 Syrians to be admitted to the US

Posted by Ann Corcoran on November 29, 2015

Yes! It probably is, if it is one of thirty seven member communions of the National Council of Churches***

Editor’s note:  This post is about Church World Service, one of nine major federal resettlement contractors pulling out all the stops in a massive PR campaign to go beyond Obama’s plan to bring in 10,000 MOSTLY MUSLIM Syrians this fiscal year. Also involved in the campaign is the US Conference of Catholic Bishops/Catholic Charities, Episcopal Migration Ministries, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, and Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service.

This is what Church World Service head honcho has to say about the propaganda campaign being launched in your churches.

McCullough CWS

CWS CEO Rev. John L. McCullough arrested at the White House in 2014 while protesting for amnesty for illegal aliens. These are not ‘churches’ but are Leftwing community organizers. McCullough pulls down a handsome six-figure salary partially funded by US taxpayers to do his NO borders political activities. Photo at Sojourners: https://sojo.net/articles/faith-leaders-arrested-white-house-calling-immigration-reform

See also Leo Hohmann’s lengthy article at World Net Daily yesterday on the campaign for Muslim migration to your towns and cities.

From The Northwestern (which appears to be using a CWS press release verbatim):

Responding to recent announcements that certain governors will not accept Syrian refugees for resettlement in their states, Church World Service President and CEO, the Rev. John L. McCullough, urged public officials to avoid knee-jerk reactions, to reject misplaced blame and to stand in solidarity with Syrian refugees, who are themselves victims of ISIS.

The terrorist attacks in Paris will certainly change our world. There may be little that we can do individually to stop the horrors of terrorism, but we can at least offer shelter and support to the families fleeing violence in their own countries.

Please look at the reports on refugees published by Church World Service visit www.cwsglobal.org and get involved

[….]

You may also consider contacting your senator and representatives in congress and encouraging them to authorize the acceptance of 100,000 Syrian refugees into the US (a number suggested by the National Council of Churches), rather than the 10,000 the government is currently considering.

Oh, and don’t forget to send us money!

Please consider sending a donation to Church World Service to support their refugee programs and contacting your representatives in Congress to encourage opening our doors to accept many more refugees.

More here.

And, btw, Church World Service was the major contractor that came to my county back in 2007 and that first drew me into this serious issue.

Are you a member of one of these faith communities?  If so, it is time to stand up to your church!

Libs in Canada change their minds: let’s not rush into this Syrian refugee thing we promised

Posted by Ann Corcoran on November 29, 2015

You knew it had to happen, the new Trudeau government couldn’t possibly get it done—-bring in 25,000 Syrians by the end of THIS December.

Justin Trudeau, his wife Sophie Gregoire and their children Xavier and Ella-Grace celebrate after he won the Federal Liberal leadership Sunday April 14, 2013 in Ottawa. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Adrian Wyld

Does Canada’s boy wonder know what he has done to his children and grandchildren?

They still want 25,000 (actually now they are saying 35,000) but over a longer time and apparently what is happening south of the border, in the US, has influenced the decision to slow down.

As they colonize Canada, Canadian immigration officials, working in the new government, have said they will take refugees selected by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees which means they will take mostly Sunni Muslims.

Here is Christian Today on the decision. They say they will focus on women and children. Young single men won’t get in unless they are gay, or traveling with Mommy and Daddy.

Now this is the question I have been asking for years as this rush to save the homosexuals of the Middle East has gotten underway—how are they going to know they are gay?  Take their word for it? (ISIS leaders are laughing their heads off!).

Canada has delayed its plans to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to the country after New Year amid concerns in the U.S. over the vetting-system and the possible embedding of Islamic State (ISIS) militants among the refugees.

Immigration Minister John McCallum made the announcement early this week, saying the refugees will come in batches with only 10,000 expected to land by Dec. 31 this year, an additional 15,000 in January and February 2016, and some 10,000 more later in 2016 for a minimum of 35,000.

“I’ve been saying time and time again, that yes we want to bring them fast, but we also want to do it right,” he said, according to Fox News. “We’re happy to take a little more time.”

[….]

McCallum said the Trudeau government will this time give priority to the “most vulnerable” such as families, women at risk and members of the LGBT community.

Single men will only be granted admission if accompanying their parents or if they are part of the LGBT community, according to Canadian newspapers.

LOL!  And, here is that word “robust” again.  Would someone please explain “robust security screening.”  Do they really think the voters are that dumb?

President Pierre Trudeau has said robust security screening continues to be a high priority in Canada in the light of recent terror attacks.

I’ll wager they can’t even get 10,000 admitted by year-end.

Meanwhile Montana ranchers take up watch on US northern border.

Office of Refugee Resettlement threatens governors, says they can’t discriminate against Syrians

Posted by Ann Corcoran on November 28, 2015

Looks like the ACLU and the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) are on the same page.

The way to solve the latest argument by the Obama Administration and the NO borders gang is to defund all refugee resettlement in the upcoming ‘omnibus’ and not single-out the Syrians for special treatment.

First Reema (from Jeh Johnson) and now this as the administration pulls out all the stops to get those 10,000 mostly Muslim Syrians resettled in your towns.

All of this activity demonstrates that the UN/US State Department Refugee Admissions Program is in the greatest crisis it has ever faced in 35 years since Senators Ted Kennedy and Joe Biden, among others, sent the bill to Jimmy Carter for his signature.

The revolving door!

Bob_Carey (1)

We wrote about Carey, at the IRC in 2013, out stumping for Syrians to be admitted to the US. Unfortunately, but no surprise, all links back to what Carey said have been removed and the IRC doesn’t allow you to check their employees list either. What are they hiding? https://refugeeresettlementwatch.wordpress.com/2013/09/04/ircs-bob-carey-the-syrians-are-coming-soon-because-we-are-going-to-make-it-happen/

Before I get to ORR chief Bob Carey’s letter to governors, a little background on the revolving door for new readers (also go here to our recent fact sheet for general overview of program):

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees chooses most of our refugees.  The US State Department admits them and Homeland Security screens them (as best they can).  The State Department PRM (Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration) contracts with nine supposedly non-profit group contractors*** to resettle them through about 312 subcontractors (at one point the State Department was throwing the number 350 around) to most US states.

PRM is overseen by Anne Richard who was a former vice President of contractor—International Rescue Committee.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) is in the Dept. of Health and Human Services and is the major dispenser of your money to the contractors through myriad federal grants.

The present director of ORR is Robert Carey who came over from one of the nine contractors (wait for it!)—International Rescue Committee (IRC)—where he served as a vice President.  His predecessor at ORR was Eskinder Negash who had come over from another contractor the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants.

Negash has since returned to a perch at his former employer—US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI).

Are you still following me?

Negash’s boss at USCRI, Lavinia Limon, was Bill Clinton’s director of ORR before she left to become President of USCRI.  LOL! did you get that!

Both Carey and Anne Richard came from the International Rescue Committee headed by BRITISH former foreign secretary David Miliband, bff Clinton, Soros and Samantha Power.  (We have an extensive archive on Miliband, brother of Britain’s “Red Ed.”)

Contractors enter government and become the dispenser of your tax dollars and then they leave government when administrations change and become the recipients of your tax dollars—and around and around they go!

Back to the Bob Carey letter to governors (remember he is relatively new at ORR and was pulling down a six-figure salary from the IRC before becoming the big shot now threatening governors).

From Breitbart:

bob_carey_large_photo_1 (1)

In April of this year, Carey moved from his job with super-wealthy contractor, IRC, and into the government where he dispenses your money to his former employer. Shouldn’t there be a law? http://www.acf.hhs.gov/blog/2015/05/an-interview-with-bob-carey-orrs-new-director

The Obama administration has warned states to comply with federal efforts to resettle Syrian refugees in communities around the U.S. or else find their states subject to enforcement action.

In a letter this week, the Office of Refugee Resettlement threatens states concerned about resettling Syrians with punitive responses if they refuse to accept the refugees. ORR explains that states may not refuse ORR-funded benefits for refugees on the basis of religion and national origin.

“Accordingly, states may not categorically deny ORR-funded benefits and services to Syrian refugees,” ORR Director Robert Carey wrote in the letter. “Any state with such a policy would not be in compliance with the State Plan requirements, applicable statutes, and their own assurances, and could be subject to enforcement action, including suspension and termination.” [I’m afraid of overloading you, but beware of termination because the feds and contractors may well make your state a Wilson-Fish stateif it isn’t already.  They would like nothing better!—ed]

The agency also pointed to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibiting discrimination for federally funded assistance benefits. Refugees are immediately eligible for welfare and other benefits upon admission to the U.S.

“Thus, it is not permissible to deny federally funded benefits such as Medicaid or [Temporary Assistance for Needy Families] to refugees who otherwise meet the eligibilities requirements,” the letter reads. “ORR is committed to ensuring that all refugees receive assistance and services vital to achieving their potential in the United States and becoming self-sufficient, integrated members of our communities.”

If nothing else comes out of this, we are pleased to say that the American taxpaying public is being educated about the huge costs this program places on our welfare system—nationally and locally!  The contractor’s job is to get refugees their welfare benefits and then they move on to the next paying batch of refugee CLIENTS.

***Nine major federal contractors which like to call themselves VOLAGs (Voluntary agencies) which is such a joke considering how much federal money they receive:

New study: Refugee children arrive with many health issues, diseases

Posted by Ann Corcoran on November 28, 2015

For all of you in the medical field and who are also concerned about refugees, more information is available.

This is from US News.  Maybe we should be suspending the refugee program for the health risks it poses that might in the end be greater than the terrorism risks!

Almost the last line was the shocking part.  The article suggests that health screening should be done before the refugee enters the country.  I thought that is what was ALREADY happening!

The news is from a new report published Nov. 12 in the American Journal of Public Health.  I didn’t search for the full report, but you should. Remember we (taxpayers) are paying for their medical treatment!  Emphasis below is mine.

FRIDAY, Nov. 27, 2015 (HealthDay News) — The main health problems of refugee children from Asia and Africa when they arrive in the United States are outlined in a new study.

Based on screenings of more than 8,100 young refugees between 2006 and 2012, the top health concerns were hepatitis B, tuberculosis, parasitic worms, high blood lead levels and anemia, the study found.

The refugees, all younger than 19, were from Bhutan, Myanmar, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Iraq and Somalia. The screenings were conducted shortly after they arrived in Colorado, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Washington state.

In general, these conditions were more common among children from the [African countries—ed] Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia and Somalia, and lower among those from Iraq, researchers said. [Although we haven’t talked about it because Middle Eastern refugees are making the news, Obama’s 2016 plan calls for our African numbers to increase by 7,000 this year.—ed]

Among refugees from Myanmar [aka Burma—ed], those who came to the United States from Thailand had more diseases than those who came by way of Malaysia, the researchers found.

“Understanding the health profiles of children from different countries allows us to provide better counseling for parents, prioritize specific tests and ensure that we give children a healthy start here in the U.S.,” study lead author Dr. Katherine Yun, a pediatrician in the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s PolicyLab and Refugee Health Program, said in a hospital news release.

The findings may have a number of implications.

It’s a good thing we have Obamacare to take care of all of these “New Americans!”

“Our data suggest that the existing [U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] medical screening guidelines remain relevant and hold great value,” Yun said.

“We also recommend that multistate public health collaborations monitor the health of newly arrived refugee children, along with resources available to them,” she added.  [Refugees move, sometimes shortly after arrival and this would imply those diagnosed, with say TB etc., may not be tracked.—ed]

Health officials should analyze these data in a timely manner, because refugee populations change significantly over time, she said.

Also, it may be more cost-effective to conduct health screenings of refugees before they leave their countries, Yun said.

Asylum seekers NOT screened upon arrival!

I did spend a few minutes visiting the CDC website and came across this (below).  Remember I told you here the other day that we now have tens of thousands of asylum seekers coming across our borders illegally or overstaying a visa and we grant asylum to about 25,000 a year (they are given all the rights of refugees we fly in once granted asylum).

The legal process can take a year or more, so asylum seekers are in your communities and unscreened for serious medical issues for months and possibly years.

From the Centers for Disease Control on Asylees:

Asylees are persons who meet the definition of a refugee but are already in the United States or are seeking admission at a US port of entry. From 2000 to 2010, the top ten countries of origin for people granted asylum in the United States were China, Colombia, Haiti, India, Ethiopia, Iraq, Armenia, Albania, Iran, and Somalia. Those who are living in the United States or are seeking admission at a US port of entry when they apply for asylum are recommended to have a domestic medical exam once they have been granted asylum status. When an asylee applies for adjustment of status, an I-693 medical examination (including vaccinations) by a civil surgeon is required. Once an asylee has been granted asylum status, their family members may follow to join them in the US, and therefore these family members would undergo the required medical examination overseas, prior to immigration.

Currently, there are very little data available about the health problems of asylees after they migrate to the United States. Many asylum seekers originate in, or transfer through, countries with public health issues similar to those facing refugees arriving through the US Refugee Admissions Program. Therefore we recommend that medical providers screening asylees apply the same screening and treatment recommendations in the CDC Refugee Domestic Guidelines when performing a medical evaluation of an asylee. For individuals who have been in the United States for more than one year, special attention should be paid to diseases with long latency and associated severe morbidity such as tuberculosis, hepatitis B, and Strongyloides infection.
