Trump: No refugee resettlement unless local community supports it

Posted by Ann Corcoran on November 7, 2016

More on what Trump said in little Mogadishu, Minnesota yesterday (earlier post is here).   Dashing out, no time to say more.  Read it all at Breitbart, here.

“A Trump administration will not admit any refugees without the support of the local community where they are being placed,” Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump told an enthusiastic crowd of more than 5,000 who greeted him at the Sun Country Airlines hangar of the Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport on Sunday.

Trump’s statement marked the first time he explicitly declared that if he is elected president, refugees will not be resettled “without the support of the local community where they are being placed.”

The Refugee Act of 1980’s “consultation clause” requires that the federal government and the director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement must consult with elected officials of state and local jurisdictions prior to the placement of refugees in their jurisdictions.

The Obama administration, however, has routinely failed to comply with this requirement. Only in the past several years have officials with the Office of Refugee Resettlement regularly communicated with states about refugees, but those communications typically come after the arrival of the refugees, rather than in advance of their arrival, as the Refugee Act of 1980 requires.

While the Refugee Act of 1980 requires the federal government to consult with local governments as well as state governments, Breitbart News has reported on several local governments who say they’ve never received any communications from the federal government before or after the resettlement of refugees.

More here.

When Trump wins we can start talking about the details of how to reform or stop the UN/US State Department Refugee Admissions Program.

Unless there is incredible refugee news, this might be my last post until Wednesday because I have some election day duties tomorrow.

Equally important, IMO, and in accordance with the Constitution, all federal funding to the volags and NGO’s must be permanently terminated, as quickly as possible. Volags and local organization must fund themselves, according to the amount they and the community can bear. Whenever federal funding is involved, “good ideas” become political tools. Corruption always follows.

The RRP is just one example, but an excellent one, for why the Constitution limits government and what government can use the People’s treasury to fund.

    STOP THE MONEY.

Permanent termination of funding for faux charity is the longterm goal for sure, but that will take long and arduous haggling in Congress, this defunding now is a temporary opportunity to provide relief to stressed communities.

Agree. Defunding and stopping the influx absolutely comes first, but once that’s done, reform of the whole shebang is imperative or we’re right back where we started. As soon as the open borders people get their wagon back on the road…

Thanks, Ann, for doing such a terrific job. We have hope this morning.

With Hillary Clinton as president, we can rewrite Crystal Gayle’s 1977 song “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” to “Don’t It Make My Red State Blue” about North Carolina and Texas and the other Red States that will be flooded with refugees.

  8. This approach won’t work. Part of the reason why we can’t get rid of the illegals is that there are communities that allow them to stay. We call these dumps “sanctuary cities”. You cannot enforce immigration laws where local and state jurisdictions act as accessories to this crime. State and local jurisdictions need to be held accountable for the laws they break, unless the rest of us, down to the individual, can decide what laws he or she will obey. Personally, I don’t want to obey the taxation laws, or the laws that require us to pay student loans back. My guess is that everyone has a few laws they feel are morally objectionable, so why can’t we disobey them like the cities and states do?

Hmmmm…..maybe i made up that county. Cannot find any reference to it here. Too bad. It was a lovely idea – one county just saying “no.” I enjoyed believing that somewhere there was a sane county and a sane federal system that respects local control. God bless Trump. May he win; please God!

San Diego is a Wilson-Fish county. Works with non-profit resettlement contractors and the Office of Refugee Resettlement directly without any state of California layer inbetween.

Isn’t that interesting….so maybe that’s one answer – 47 counties in SC could opt out and just let Columbia and Charleston resettle refugees for the next 7 weeks .

Only problem with Trump’s theory is that refugees are permitted to move (just like American citizens). So even if they settle initially in Columbia or Charleston, in three months they will be your next door neighbors out in the smaller cities of SC.

Ann, isn’t this already the law? Doesn’t everything depends on enforcement plus having decent local officials. If I take my local government officials at their word, they did not believe that they had any input. But seems to me that they actually do have a say. (But I don’t take them at their word – whether or not they believe they have a say, politicians always want to be counted as being for what’s popular, unless they have masters they have to obey other than we the people.

Also, hasn’t San Diego County withdrawn for the RRP? If San Diego can do it so can my county. Or so it seems to me. Going to check your data base now to see what I can find on San Diego.

Sure they withdrew, but it doesn’t mean much, they still get boatloads of refugees through a non-profit contractor working there. We are all looking for the silver bullet, and alas there is only one and it is really really hard and that is to elect the right people to Congress and then sit on them from the minute they get there so they don’t get sucked into the swamp (special interests, campaign donations, Chamber of Commerce pressure and swollen heads!). Of course that doesn’t mean doing nothing on the local level, never ending grassroots pressure is the groundwork to get the right people elected….
