Media Research Center Prez: “Shadow-banning most sinister threat to free speech in history”

Posted by Ann Corcoran on January 13, 2018

It is bad, but I’m not sure it is the worst threat to free speech.  In fact, if you aren’t a Twitter user you might not know what all the fuss is about.

If anyone asked me, I would say the worst threat is the kind of silencing that people like South Dakota’s Taneeza Islam use when they bully venues to shut down speaking events she and her ilk disapprove of by frightening owners/managers in to cancelling events. And, often frighten speakers in to silence.

That kind of intimidation is mean and personal and causes people to fear for their safety.

In America we have a right to speak and we have a right to gather!

bozell

Brent Bozell sent a letter to Twitter’s CEO demanding he address censorship by the social media platform.    https://www.cnsnews.com/blog/craig-bannister/bozell-letter-calls-twitter-ceo-condemn-address-shadow-banning-censorship

That said, let’s talk more about the stunning revelations this week from James O’Keefe who got the dirt on Twitter and shadow-banning—a less personal, but nonetheless serious threat to free speech.

And, it isn’t just about Twitter! Shadow-banning can be used in all sorts of situations where social media is taking the pulse of citizens’ views, as we mentioned when we talked about shadow-banning possibly being used by the Heritage Foundation, here.

Breitbart (Twitter Censorship!) has a good explanation here, but simply put this is how it works:

You post a comment, or tweet something, and you can see on your computer screen that the comment posted and you think your remark is being seen by the world, but no one else sees it but you!

As Breitbart  says, the very best, most skillful, shadow-banning is when you are never the wiser about the fact that you are speaking to an audience of one!

Here is CNS News on Brent Bozell’s comments on O’Keefe’s latest :

Twitter’s practice of “shadow banning” conservative posts, exposed Thursday in a new James O’Keefe undercover video, constitutes “the most sinister threat to free speech in history,” Media Research President Brent Bozell warns in a statement reacting to the news.

The Project Veritas video, featuring current and former Twitter employees describing the social media giant’s shadow banning censorship tactics, prompted the previously-skeptical Bozell to issue a warning to all Americans:

“I have been a critic of some of James O’Keefe’s work in the past, so I have the credentials to say the following: What O’Keefe has produced is not just extraordinary but it demands national attention.

“If social media is the communications vehicle of the future — and it is — then this represents the most sinister threat to free speech in history. That is no exaggeration.

“The radical left is out to censor the voices of all with whom they disagree. O’Keefe has proven it. Every American needs to watch this — if, of course, Twitter will allow it.”

I’ve been shadow-banned by Twitter on a couple of occasions (maybe more times than I know before I caught on!), so now I am wise to them!

Without getting too deep in to the weeds and techie details, here is what I have found and what I do.

After each tweet that I consider important, I check the feed for my tweets and the analytics which is where each tweet is recorded and statistics are gathered. If it is missing there, I quickly go to the tweet on my screen (before it is lost in hundreds of new incoming tweets) and get a screenshot.

Then I do this as I did yesterday when I tweeted about the President’s supposed comments on certain countries.

I bring attention to the fact that Twitter shadow-banned me and I put a screenshot of the original tweet into a new tweet.  Like this…

By putting a photo of the tweet that ‘disappeared’ in another tweet, I alert my followers to dirty tricks by Twitter! And, likely end up with more interest than if Twitter had published it in the first place! So far, they haven’t shadow-banned my second attempt to get the message out.

If you are on Twitter, follow me (@RefugeeWatcher).  I tweet a lot of information that I have no time to write about in a post here at RRW.  And, you can see what I’m tweeting in the right hand side bar when you visit my blog directly.

This post is filed in my “free speech” category and in “blogging.”

  1. ZUCKerberg wants to censor who uses FACEBOOK —- but says WE CANNOT censor who comes into Our house?!
Take the locks off his doors. Take those WALLS down from around ZUCKerberg’s houses. NEVER allow him to file a “breaking & entering” complaint because ZUCKerberg wants anyone to be able to “break & enter” America.
By the way …..ZUCK thinks he can just “share” our house/Nation …..
he never served in uniform so he should “share” all his money with those who were wounded saving HIS FREEDOM and PROPERTY.
Since ZUCK does not recognize Our property rights to Our country then he relinquishes all property rights to “his” money. “Funny” how these Leftwingers believe in Socialism and Sharing ……… YOUR property………. but Their’s is THEIR’S.

  2. Where are the FAT MOUTHS who are rich thanks to “talk radio” and conservatism? Why are Limbaugh, Beck, Savage, etc, etc not MAN enough to file law suits? God knows they have piled up enough RICHES. All they care about is THEIR MONEY and shilling ghost written PABLUM books.
FACEBOOK, TWITTER, YOUTUBE, REDDIT, GOOGLE are PLACES OF PUBLIC GATHERING, “SOCIAL Media”, and ADVERTISE themselves as PUBLIC places.. They are also PUBLICLY TRADED CORPORATIONS, unlike the PRIVATELY owned and operated “Mom&Pop” Bakery and Party Planner SUED by homosexuals.
FACEBOOK is a PUBLIC SPACE therefore it has no right or legal option to censor participants. FACEBOOK is a PUBLICLY TRADED company, NOT a “private entity” and it solicits PUBLIC memberships.
Just as the “courts” say cake bakers HAVE to bake homosexual cakes, and wedding planners HAVE to “accept” homosexual weddings, ZUCKERberg has to accept opinions, videos, and pictures he does not like. These Social Media/Meeting Places must accept anything which is Permissible under the First Amendment.
DO they say all Halal and Kosher meat butchers should be forced to process PORK?! Same religious convictions!!!
A lowly COUNTY CLERK was jailed for refusing to “do her duty” by not issuing homosexuals marriage licenses The Baker, Planner, and Clerk SHOULD have just said: “You homosexuals VIOLATE OUR COMMUNITY GUIDELINES” !!! They advertise themselves as “Social Media & Public Spaces” so everything that is covered under the First Amendment can be posted there. A Party Planner and a Baker were successfully sued for refusing service to homosexuals ….. these “Social Media” can & should also be sued for violating People’s 1st Amendment RIGHTS to speak freely in PUBLIC SPACES.
Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, etc. engaging in politically motivated censorship is like your meter reader shutting off your electricity because you have a Trump sign on your lawn. These social media have become like public utilities and therefore have no right to engage in political censorship. It is way past time to impose common carrier status on social media. Just like the phone company cannot censor your conversations there, social media should not be allowed to interfere with content there. Social media is the modern day phone company.
“It is way pay time to impose common carrier status on social media.”
Meanwhile, fascist Ajit Pai of the FCC has killed net neutrality [could be overturned by Congress, but don’t hold your breath]. He has thus disallowed common carrier status for ISPs and, moreover, has allowed them to censor content, block websites, raise prices for everyone, and wage class war by using an excellent standard of speed and service for the rich and an inferior one (slow speed and service) for the non-rich.
“Social media is the modern day phone company.” – and also a potent means of grassroots organization. By censoring one side they are DENYING the CIVIL RIGHT to organize and associate.

Shadow banning is the most insidious form of creeping censorship. It’s becoming common everywhere nowadays as the left/anarchist alliance seeks to shut down all public debates where they disagree with the main speakers. In Australia our Sydney University, among others, has shown its lack of will power in the face of promised violence from these people, many of them failed students themselves. In British unis there have been several cancellations of visiting speakers, and of course, in America Aytaan Hirsi Ali was banned from giving a lecture at Brandeis University by pro-Islamist groups.

  4. This is why people are so opposed to proprietary form of communication, like Twitter and Facebook. Usenet was great way to communicate, as were websites with posts and instant messaging.

  5. The eight years of the heinous Obama Administration left many questions about his honesty, devious tactics, lies, deflections of his application or non-application of just and fair treatment for Americans unanswered, could fill many blank pages that demand his attention and that of his henchmen and women. My first query would insist that he allowed the Muslim Student Association Chapters that exist on hundreds of American campuses to discriminate with persecution, sometimes violence, Jewish organizations and individuals on these some campuses?

What manner of school administrations would allow this, the very decency of the student body should insist that school presidents rectify the problem or step downs, as they would were the racist, sexist mistreatment and discrimination occur.

Why does American society allow it?

So it would be if Google/Facebook/Twitter/YouTube had a monopoly on these services. Although each are major players in their respective niches, they are literally dancing on the razors edge; a major pecadillo could start an exodus to alternative options.

    • @Spamtrap19990601: I think you overestimate the intelligence and moral character of Twitter users and the public in general.

The fact is, that as Ann pointed out, even though we have had the ancient European right of free association taken away from us- to the point where an Iowa City man is being prosecuted for refusing to serve a terrorist- the government will not work to support our own right to hire venues and hold speeches. Only people who shouldn’t be in the country are protected in this way.

If we want to live in a free country, all the irritants that make freedom impossible need to go home.

Paul Nehlen’s proposed ‘shall not censor’ legislation is a good step towards clawing back a few of those rights, to aid us in working towards the ultimate goal.

We have speakers in MN who are constantly harassed and bullied at venues. Even Letters to the Editor are censored or prohibited. The Red Green Axis is in full force here with the help of so-called “churches.”

This is no different than facebook, who several years ago finally admitted after the fact that they manipulated the data users saw and didn’t see in their feed for a “study/analytics”. We know they all do it. Put the screws to us every chance they get. Google and the others manipulate searches and what we see in them.

It’s good to have it on video. Excellent work Project Veritas! And Ann! I hope the President retweets that tweet soon.
